3D Beatles Vinil Record. 15 min project

"In the town where I was born,
Lived a man who sailed to sea,

1. Create New Layer(Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+Alt/Opt+N) and fill it in grey. Set this Layer Blending Mode to Dissolve and Layer Opacity to 50%. Select All( Ctrl/Cmd+A) and Copy Merged(Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+C), Paste(Ctrl/Cmd+V) to new Layer.

2. To make concentric circles use Filters -> Blur -> Radial Blur. Apply Radial Blur two more times.

3. Apply Levels with shown on the corresponding picture settings.

4. There are numerous ways to create lights, though I chosed shown way below. Cut out disc and Paste it to New Layer. Draw Angle Gradient(G) from a center of the disc on a new Layer. You can make your own Gradient Fill(I used preset Gradient from Photoshop default set and Dissaturated it). Set Blending Mode to Screen and Layer Opacity to 50%. Duplicate Layer and Rotate its content at 180° with same Scren Mode and Opacity.

5. After creation of all necessary elements, I used Select All( Ctrl/Cmd+A) commandand Copy Merged(Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+C), Paste(Ctrl/Cmd+V) to new Layer.

6. Make New Layer. To cheat for the sake of illusion of 3d perspective, I used Filter -> Vanishing Point. Create perspective grid and Paste(Ctrl/Cmd+V) contents of the Clipboard(rember? image of the disc still there). It will appear flat first, but when you move it right on the grid, it will lay in the needed perspective. Use Free Transform(Ctrl/Cmd+T) inside Vanishing Point interface to proportionally decrease size.

3D Chocolate

3D Chocolate. 30 min project

Today is a day of confession. I am an chocolate addict. I eat 2 bars a day on a regular basis. Probably can do more.Most definitely. Just never ‘ve been brave enough buy more… Once I was in Paris and stuck in amazement at a door of a little belgium choco store(somewhere in Saint-Germain, somewhere at a corner of Rue Cuvier & Rue Jussieu. It was just like a golden bonbon dream… But well my digital chocolate lesson not actually about chocolate itself, but rather I invented how to create metallic foil effect in Photoshop. At least, I have never saw this effect made by somebody else… So, here you are… eat my choco!

1. First of all, for the taste of chocolate, I created just one piece with help of same old Layer Styles. And when I was satisfied with it I just multiplied to get 4 by 7 bar.

2. And now main purpose of this project - realistic metal foil. For years I was so foolish to despise Gradient Modes other, than regular Linear and maybe Radial… How unforgivingly stupid I was!!! I got to repeat…. STUPID!

Anyway, I made square selection and started to fill it with… Diamond gradient in a Difference mode. After 6-8 chaotic draggs I applied Filter -> Stylize - Emboss with following parameters: Angle=130°, Height=2px, Amount=250% to have some crumpled paper effect.

3. In following steps I saved "crumpled paper" sample as Custom Brush shape. Named it "Foil". I changed my Custom Brush setting the way to make it as crazy as possible: highest Size and Angle Jitters, large amount of Scattering parameters.

4. Then I started to draw with Paint Brush in… of course, Difference mode. You can play it as long, as you want - it is addiction, it is just like caleidoscope… Wow! For the great fun, change your "Foil" Brush Size and Opacity. On a top of my "Foil" Layer I made colored Layer, with applied Cloud Filter to it, where Fore/Background colors are blue/gold. I setting Blend Mode of this Layer to Overlay to see underlying "Foil" Layer.

5. In the final steps added paper wrapper to my choco bar. I transformed my objects to make them look dimensional, added some texts, drop shadows, glows, etc.

3D Tennis

3D Tennis. 1 hour project

First tennis rule I learnt was: hold racquet by its handle just like you’d hold a little bird. Not too tight, not to loose. Do not choke it and don’t let it go. Same thing about Wacom Pen…

Another most important lesson I got, was: if you got first decision, follow it immediately. For example: you decided strike hard, but in a fraction of second another "smart" idea coming to your head. What about deep top-spin? Balance between two completely different decisions will cause you send your winning ball right to the net. Thanks God, we have Photoshop and always can "undo" wrong decision.

My favorite tennis player of all times is Mr. Boris Becker. My favorite photoshopper of all time is Mr. Russel Brown. What about you?

1. Let start with ball. Though I could start drawing selection and filled in needed color. I thought to make Ellipse Shape Tool(Toolbox shortcut V) in a Path Mode. Holding Ctrl/Cmnd +Shift(to constraing its verticals and horizontals) I drew a perfect circle. Later you will understand why I used U-Tool. And saved Path, giving name "Ball". Pourquoi pas?

2. I loaded my "Ball" Path to selection and only now filled it in mustard color(#b89300)

3. Using Rounded Rectangle Tool I draw some kind of a capsule shape, also in Path Mode. Seconds later I was ready modify path. I added two points to Path one for its top part and another to a bottom. Then I moved both points inside a bit. And then I tweak a bit "Slice" Path, making illusion of a perspective. And then I stroked this path with Brush.

4. As you see on a corresponding picture I applied Layer Style to stroked line on a "Slice" Layer. And brought "Slice" Layer right on a top of a "Ball" Layer

5. In this step I applied Layer Style to my ball.

6. And now - Photoshop3D Hair Replacement Office and Barber Shop side-by-side!

Remember in step #1 I promised explain why I made "Ball" Path. This Path will be a base for ball’s fur. I prepered custom Brush Shape(see it in the "marching ants" selection?). The small one. For better view I zoomed it in to show it should be a bit fuzzy, though you are free to use your own shape. It can be not just a straight line but maybe a bit curly.

7. First I saved this New Brush Shape shape and then stroked "Ball" path with my Custom "Ball Fur 01" Brush. Keep in mind, that Custom Brush Shape: Dynamic -> Angle Jitter should be set to Direction in its options. Only then hair will grow in the right direction.

8. I duplicated "Ball" Path and transformed it using Ctrl/Cmnd + Shift + T shortcut making this circular path a bit smaller, than its parental path. And as in a step 7, I stroked this new path with same Custom "Ball Fur 01" Brush.

9. I repeated step 8 as many times, as I reached center of a ball..

10. Here’s completed result of my "hairy" tennis ball. Some tweakings, some shadows, some blur and text on ball’s face.

11. Let’s talk about racquet. And one more time, remember my "Ball" path? Ain’t a smart one I was? I duplicated it and renamed to "Head". Using Edit -> Transform Path -> Warp, I’ve got "head" shape I considered right. Then I stroke "Head" path on a New "Head" Layer. I made new "Neck" paths and also stroked them on a separate "Neck" Layer.

12. In this step I added 3d feeling, appling Layer Style to both "Head" and "Neck" Layers. Also I created vertical and horizontal strings. You know what, I wasn’t lazy to count them to make it as close as possible to my original "Prince" racquet-bird.

13. Other details, leather handle wrap, simbols, highlights and racquet is done. Though, it is in a front projection and still looks flat.

14. I merged all Racquet Layers in one "Racquet Top" Layer, except "Strings". Then I duplicated "Racquet" Layer and renamed it to "Racquet Bot " Layer and placed all my layers in following position:

a) "Racquet Top" Layer
b) "Strings" Layer
c) "Racquet Bot" Layer

I darkened, burnt" "Racquet Bot" Layer and broght it closer to "Racquet Top" to make illusion of two rims of racquet head. Some final tweaks and voila! Silence,

mesdames et messieurs… Game is over!

3D Hourglass

3D Hourglass. 45 min project

What thing we value more than anything? Time. What thing we waste? Time. This simple subject caused me get thoughtful(what’s not happening to me very often) and I decided dedicated my time depicting a time holder…

1. As always, Path with Path Tool. Filled it in black. Duplicated shape and using Edit -> Free Transform(Ctrl/Cmnd + T) -> Flipped Horizontal. Then I combined left and right sides of Glass part of HG.

2. Similar actions were taken to create top Column sample. After I created top part of this object I duplicated layer and Flipped Vertical, using same Free Transform Ball shaped object was creted on the Tween Layer. I grouped((Ctrl/Cmnd + G) all three layers together in one Folder called "Column Left"

3. In the next phase I created wooden texture. Many of you probably heard about this technique, though I will remind - repeating is the mother of learning. I made 1 pixel selection with Rectangular Selection Tool and filled it in grey. Then I applied Add Noise Filter( Amount=400, Gaussian, Monochromatic). After it I used again my best Photoshop assistant - Free Transform Tool to stretch texture.

4. As you see from the corresponding picture Image -> Adjustment -> Hue/Saturation((Ctrl/Cmnd + U) was applied to my texture. I made a New Layer n a top of a textured Layer and filled it in light-brown color. Adjusting Layer Opacity I got necessery color for my Wood texture. Then I merged these two Layers.

5. Here I’ve tried to make texture uneven, trying approach more natural effect. Edit - Transform - Warp was taken first and then FIlters -> Liquify(Ctrl/Cmnd + Shift + X)

6. I prefer create objects on separate Layers - what would be always easy to edit them in a case I change my mind. In a case of those lttle Ball shaes(they made from Ball shape, 2 shapes for holder and Drop Shadow), I goupped them in one Ball Shape folder and then made two more versions of this folder. I applied Layer Style to make them 3d look and texture to all of my objects, perspectively distorted them when needed.

7. I made 2 more versions of "Column Left" group, naming them "Column Right" and "Column Hind". Last one will be behind Glass part of my HG. And again, Layer Style and then wooden texture was applied to all of HG columns.

8. Custom Brush shape was created to make some kind of dust and scratches to add some realism to wooden parts of HG.

9. Since I decided to make some kind of mystical feelings. I switch my background color to grey and Glass part to White. I added Layer Mask to Glass Layer and loaded Glass Shape selection onto Layer Mask Then I Contracted selection and Featherd it from Select -> Modify -> Contract and Select -> Modify -> Feather(Ctrl/Cmnd + Alt/Opt +D), with values seen on a picture and filled selection in black.

10. Finally, I spend another 10 minutes to create Sand parts of my HG. I added highlights, drop shadows and reflections to make it more natural.

3D Bike

3D Bike. 3 hours project

That’s how Freddy and his guys started their famous song. That’s what I sang yesterday afternoon riding my "Queen of the Road". Yes, it is Her Majesty. After all, I am this bike master and have all rights to name it anyway I want…

1. Silhoette of the frame of my bike was made with Rounded Rectangle Tool pieces on Alpha Channel. To make these pieces connections rounded I applied Gaussian Blur first and "Thresholded" then.

2. Bike wheels where made by bunch of the variously stroked circles. Layer Styles where applied to tire circle, small amount of Bevel/Emboss, you know… Wheels spokes were done by using not well known trick. Maybe just a few designers know that you shouldn’t go to Adobe Illustrator to use its “Step and Repeat” command. Because it is right here, in Photoshop! In this particular case I created Spoke #1 with Line Tool(U) and selected my spoke. Then I needed to Free Transform it(Control/Command+T). I moved center of rotation from center of spoke right to the center of my wheel. Then… I wasn’t best math student in the school, though I could easily figured out the angle rotation. With 16 wheel spokes altogether, I had 8 spokes on one side of the wheel, so my angle is 360/8=40°. So all I had to do, it was type my angle value in the Free Transform Tool Properties Palette. And now hocus-pocus. Holding three main keys(Control/Command + Shift + Alt/Option), I started my “Finger Dance”(this sentence is copyrighted by me… use it only with reference to Photoshop3d.com or me, Felix d’Obrin)… So, Control/Command + Shift + Alt/Option… and of course T. Again and again. Result of my “Finger Dance” is seen in the picture below. Last, I duplicated spokes Layer and rotated it 20° CW(or CCW).

3. To all of my shapes I applied Layer Styles. See its detailed settings from images below :

4. Similar technique I mentioned in the paragraph 2, I use creating star. The difference was, instead of using Properties Palette I did it manually, with Info Palette… just for fun.

5. Star itself was made with Poligon Tool(U) and setting shown in the picture.

6. Chain needed a bit of my attention. First I made link piece and defined it as a Brush. In the following step I made chain Path. To properly set links on my path I used Shape Dynamics in the Brush Palette. All options and controls set to "0" and "Off", except Adgle Jitter - its control should indicate "Direction". Only then we will receive willing result.

7. Unexpectedly, problem with frame texture was solved quite easily: Satin option of Layer Style Palette gave me want I wanted.

8. As always, the rest of things were matter of time and technique. Tell you the truth, I was awfully bored making those tiny things… But give me some credit - I finally finished this project.

3D Paint

Maybe someone of us still remember that children’s song about "sky of a color of orange, sea of a color of orange, about green of a color of orange and certainly camel of the same color". I was in the same mood and singing that foolish song I painted my own world in a color of orange…All I needed just paint bucket and brush(all supplies made by Photoshop3d, of course).

1. I started from paint bucket drawing. Well… Should I give an advice to old auntie Judy how to milk a cow? Should I explain to Photoshop Pros in order to create a cylinder they have to draw a rectangle and 2 ellipses(one for bottom part of bucket and another for top opening)? BTW: topmost ellipse will serve me as a bucket lid.

2. After that I applied Layer Style to bucket. It is just Gradient Overlay as you see on a corresponding picture.

3. Actually that simple top ellipse I mentioned in Step #1 was happened in a great use designing paint bucket lid. I loaded ellipse to selection on empty layer and stroked selection. This stroke will be a rim of a lid and a rim of a bottom part of a bucket

4. Now time to spill some paint! In this case I use rearely taken Photoshop native plugin, called Fibers(know what? I will let you find it yourself. I bet it will take 5 to 7 minutes to find, though it is under Filters menu… LOL)

5. In the following step I Copy/Paste hair-like image to Alpha Chanel, blurred it with Gaussian Blur…

6. and applied Treshold. And a small amount of Gaussian Blur to soften edges. Wow! "EyeCandy" people going to assasinate me - no more life for theirs Drip Filter…

7. Paint suppose to be dimensional and be a color of orange. Of course, my dear friends, Layer Style is a great choice to do so.

8. Guess, what filter I used making paint brush? Well? Of course, I made brush hair with that forgotten Fiber Filter(please call it Mr. Fiber from now).

And now I am about to paint my world in a color of Orange. Avante!

3D Paper Boat

3D Paper Boat. 15 min project

As poet said: he has spectacles on his nose and Autumn in his heart. It’s about me tonight. I am in a blue mood. I remembered my childhood and a time when I sent my first paper boat to a overseas trip…

1. First of all I have drawn a quick sketch of a paper boat and used it as a guide for my future 3d boat

2. On a New transparent Layer, using Pen Tool I quickly(how smart I was creating sketch!) outlined my drawing. I saved created Path with "Side R"(meaning right side) name.

3. I loaded "Side R" Path and filled selection with warm grey color

4. Then I duplicated "Side R" Path, renaming it to "Side L". Why I did it? Because left and right sides of a boat are identical, except theirs top part. So, I just moved down and corrected position of two anchor points of the path to shape left side of my boat. I loaded "Side L" Path and filled it with a bit lighter grey, then I did for "Side R" on a New Layer.

5. In the following step I created a "Deck-House" Path, loaded and filled in another shade of grey on its own Layer to differ it from left and right sides of the boat. Dodge and Burn Tools - that’re right tools to make 3d impression!

6. On a top of each of a left, right and deck-house Layers I placed a New Layer with image of vintage nespaper(guilty, I found old "New York Times" photo somewhere on Internet, using Google image search engine). I moved and rotated each newspaper image unevenly.

As, probably, you alredy figured out, all I needed it was create Layer Mask for each of my nespaper Layers, where I set "Newspaper" Layers to Multiply.

3D Coca-Cola Can

It always great to have some cold can of Coca-Cola at a hot summer day, isn’t it?

1. Create this shape. Not hard, eh?

2. Apply Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur. Quite amount

3. After applying Adjust -> Threshold it looked like this. Create Path based on this shape. Correct it, if needed. Duplicate shape, flip and connect left and right sides to assemble the bottle shape.

4. Apply Layer Styles okg-01.asl to bottle and bottle “mouth piece”, as well as vine shape(download the styles from HERE ). After Copy Merge apply Layer Style to bottle another time(just switch sides and make it more blured)

5. Use images for opacity map and lable(or create it from scratch, as I did), create cork shape.

3D Shadow

3D Shadow. 20 min project

Each and every thing cast its shadow. I don’t mean vampires. "What is so special?", you’ll ask. Nothing, nothing special, if we are talking about one-two legged objects. What, if we have 4-legged chair set in a perspective, huh? I’ll tell ya - recently I opened my Americas and found simple way to do so!

1. Remember initial chair image should be on transparent Layer!

First of all, I duplicated my chair to a new Shadow Layer, keeping original Chair as a Guide Layer. Then I dissected all chair elements from Shadow Layer: front legs, legs with back, sit and rim to its own layer, making selection and using Layer Via Cut(Ctrl+Shift+J) action. They are apart on the corresponding picture only for showing purposes.

2. In the next step I distorted each of the chair element(front legs, legs with back, sit and rim), accordingly to chair perspective, using Transform Tool, what else?

3. Finished my project, combining all parts together in one Layer. Filled drop shadow in blask, added some Gaussian Blur and Gradient to drop shadow’s Layer Mask, making effect of the perspective blur…

3D Envelope

3D Envelope. 15 min project

Oh, those importent documents! I feel diziness when I got ‘em in my mailbox… Anyway, here’s simpliest way to create crumpled yellow envelope. I usually hate give detailed information, such as an exact parameters. After all, we are artists and gotta be creative and enthusiastic to find new, our own ways to depict this or that particular object or texture. Since this tutorial intended for beginners, I will try to be perfectly exact.

1. Open New Document. Make sure your Fore/Background is set to Black&White, if not, hit "D" on your keyboard. Go to Filters. Render -> Clouds. Then Stylize -> Emboss Angle=135°, Height=8, Amount=141. Then… Hue/Saturation and check Colorize box. Insert following settings: Hue=38, Saturation=43, Lightness=0.

2. To finish this project is a metter of time… Create left, right, bottom and top flaps, willingly on separate Layers and apply drop shadows of a smallest value( I used Layer Styles, Blend Mode=Multiply, Opacity=65°, Angle=120°, Distance=5px, Spread=0, Size=10px, rest values leaves as is) to each of them. Make other elements, those red circles(heck, dunno how to call ‘em) and thread, holes, text, etc. Put some documents inside to make it look even more realistic. Gocha?
