3D Donut. 15 min project

This project is very simple and intended for those, who just started play Photoshop’s "do re mi fa sol la si…"

1. Using Pen Tool draw 2 circles similar to those below

2. Use Transform command and switch to Warp weird Tool to create uneven shape for the future donut

3. Two following images illustrate power of Layer Styles

4. To create donut topping crumbs, I set Brush to the specified settings, where Brush tip is single 4px dot(please note that crumbles are dark - it is just to make it visible. In real they should be set to light beige color)

5. This picture shows Layers I made. Purpose of Roll 2 and Roll 3 Layers made to adjust highlights and shadows of the donut.

3D Cactus

3D Cactus. 1 hour project. In memory of my beloved Red Caca.

There was King Cacatos I and Queen Cacacia. Once Queen Cacacia gave a birth to little cactusie. Happy parents gave newborn princess name Red Caca(read: kaka, has nothing in common with a product of digestion though), because she was blushing anyone looked at her. She was so tender and gentle and had absolutely no stings at all. They lived in a small "Claypot" castle, small, but cosy.

Once, officer of Royal Air Force, lieutenant of Fly Squadron Di Mosca flying high in the sky, noticed young princess. And, certainly fell in love with her, right from a first glance. And she also deeply loved brave officer. They started to date. And with each date their love grew high.

Okay, let’s make story short… Once our lover Fly was send for a mission and never got back. Nobody knew what happened to daredevil. Princess Caca shedded her tears days and night, days and nights, untill she died. She knew wet kills cactuses… but even though, she would never stop.

See the little hole on the left. That’s was my Red Caca place…

1. Let’s start this lesson designing small ball-like cactus. To better understand this object structure I decided to dissect it with horizontal planes. And what I got is the 13 corners star. Using Polygon Tool(shortcut "U"), I created star with 13 sides, with sides indented by 10%.

2. Well… but it is just top projection. In order to make my cactus in a perspective view, I had to make some adjustments to star shape. I selected Bottom part of the star and scaled it down, same thing I did to Top part, but scaled a bit more, comparing to Bottom part, accordingly to the Perspective Law. In the last step of transformation, holding Ctrl/Cmnd + Alt/Opt Key, I drag handles of the Transform Tool apart. I named resulted Level "Cactus Base".

3. I duplicated "Cactus Base" Layer and renamed it to "Level 01" Layer. Moved it up and transformed it down a bit, regarding Y axis. Why? Because each upper level "dissection" or"slice" should be seen less a bit in a real world of perspective. Just a bit. Also please take note to Line in grey on a left. It is cactus Side projection and all following "dissections" should be made accordingly to this projection: wider or narrower.

4. on the corresponding picture you can see all "dissections" of cactus. Don’t forget to place each "slice" onto separate Layer. It will help you in the future.

5. And now simple, but in my view damn boring part of this project. Using Pen Tool, I created Two Paths(one for lightened, another for shadowed parts of cactus divisions), connecting corresponding points of each star level. I made New Layer called "Divisions", put "Light" Path to selction and filled selection in light-green color. Same thing I did to "Shadow" Path: also put it to selection and filled it in dark-color on the same "Divisions" Layer. Keep in mind, you don’t have to have zillions Paths for each division, these "Light" and "Shadow" Paths can be easily reusable. It is up to you…

6. Something like this you should get by the end of process of loading Paths to selection and filling them in appropriate colors.

7. Here, I applied Layer Style to my Cactus. You can see its setting on the picture below.

8. Now you will understand why I insisted to keep all horizontal "dissections" in separate Layers. Being at completed "Cactus Body" Layer, click on any "dissection" Layer holding Ctrl/Cmns key and it will load "disseceted" star shape selection. Now you free to add some more 3d taste to this object, darkening or lightening it(you can feather selection a bit, in a case of necessity).

9. Here you see how I made cactus stings.

10. I placed those stings over "Cactus Body" Layer. Multiplied and moved them in a proper positions, accordingly to cactus 3d shape.Some manual painting and tweaking was applied to complete the task.

11. Here’s shown design process of a tallest cactus. I created Pathfor one of this cactus "tentacle" and stroked Path, clicking on "Stroke Path with Brush" icon in the Path Palette. I checked "Simulate Pressure" check box in the dialog box, as shown. I devided resulted shape in half and transformed bottom part, flipping it vertically. I repeated this process 12 more times, creating 26 "tentacles" in total.

12. Another tweakings, burning and dodging, little cactus’s pimple-like stings were made hand drawn with tiny Custom Brush shape. The rest of image, i.e. pot, fround texture are so common things, I bet many of you knows how to do it probably better, than I. So, I didn’t want to wast neither mine nore your precious time, describing such obvious things…

3D Octopus

3D Octopus. 1 hour project

When I was little boy, I liked spent my time in front of a small TV screen, breathlessly watching Jacques-Yves Cousteau ocean travels on his famous Calypso ships.Maybe old "souvenirs" caused me to depict magical dweller of ocean deep - Mr. Octopus… Despite this image looks pretty complexed - it is very simple in real!

1. I think it is always important to make quick sketch of the future image, especially when you make live creatures.

2. For each pair of Octopus’s legs I made one Path and save on separate Path Layer.

3. In this step I clicked on Stroke Path with Brush icon, holding Alt/Option key to call Stroke Path dialog box. In this box I checked Simulate Pressure box to achieve necessary effect. Keep in mind, Brush size is equal to thicker part of Octopus’s legs.

4. As you see on a corresponding picture I applied Layer Styel to Colorize and Bevel Octopus’s legs.

5. Here I applied described in steps 2 to 4 actions to each pair of legs. I created Octopus’s body(large Bevel in its Layer Style)and forehead.

6. I created couple Custom Brushes, first for Octopus sensors - suction cups and second for its skin. Please refer to shown here outlined in squares samples.

7. To make sea bottom I applied Filters -> Render -> Clouds. To see underlaying Layer I set blending mode of "Sea Buttom" Layer to Multiply.

8. I filled the topmost Layer in dark green and then applied Filter -> Render - Lighting Effects. Some bubbles were made to finalize scene. You can find description of this effect in one of the first "Coca-Cola" project…. See? I didn’t lied to you - it was very-very simple. O’revoir! for now…

3D Nest

3D Nest. 15 min project

Friend of mine told me funny story about english pointer who instead of carry his hunting duties, converted himself to a guard of a nest of a wild duck. I couldn’t keep myself to illustrate that tale…

1. Don’t ask me why I decided to create perfect circular selection right in the middle of my document, using guides. Maybe because I am a perfectionist… Dunno…

2. Then I made kind of a sloppy working Path from my perfect selection and name it "Nest Path" as you see from the picture..

3. This step is highly important in a term of creation of a straw nest. My Custom Brush Tip Shape looks like a thin line(swatch 121). Even though it is angled, you can make it straight.. Use settings from the image below.

4. In this step I defined colors for Custom Brush Color Dynamics. Maybe I made colors bit too bright, so you can correct it for your project, if you wish.

5. I clicked on a "Stroke Path with Brush" button in the Path Palette to receive desirable result.

6. I stroke again and couple times more. To make it looks 3 dimensional for the final stroke I clicked on "Stroke Path with Brush" button, holding Alt/Option Keyboard Key. It opened "Stroke Brush" dialog box, where I checked "Simulate Pressure"

7. My next proceedure was make insides of a nest. As you probably figured out I used same Custom Brush.

8. Burn and Dodge Tools are great helpers to create illusion of a 3d object and and couldn’t avoid chance to use them to make effects of light and shadow of a nest.

9. All I got to do it was create eggs. With Elliptical Marquee Tool I made oval selection and using Warp Tool distorted my selection to the needed shape. I filled selection in pastel beige color and applied shown Layer Style to it. Some Drop Shadow and voila! Eggs are in the nest. Should I tell how I made a portrait of english pointer? Guess…

3D Fishtank

3D Fishtank. 3 hours project

Once superintendant of the building I live, got to the sea and caught Goldfish. The little one started to ask bastard let her go. She promiced to fulfil any three wishes, that come to his head. He thought for a while and then exclaimed:

- I wish to have lips much larger, than I have!

In a turn of a second his lips were really huge… Super was out of his excitment. He flapped his lips over and over again. And Goldfish reminded him to think the second wish.

- I wish to have my nose twice larger!

Super touched his nose and was about to jump of a pleasure feeling trunk-size thing.

And Goldfish demanded for a third and the last wish. This time super thought a lot and finally got a final decision:

- I wish my ears were thrice larger!

And in a blink of an eye his ears became a size of a two parachutes. My super was so damn happy when he looked in his pocket mirror. He became really happy, as he never was. And Goldfish asked my super a question right before to leave:

- Listen, sucker! All people ask for business luck, good health, for money after all… what about you, why couldn’t you ask the same?

- Could I? - mumbled surprized super.

I got to ask my Goldfish about something different, I will need to think a bit…

1. There’s nothing exciting about creation of a simple black dot. I say it suppose to be large, really big! That’s how I started build a home for my little fishie.

2. From the supplied picture you can see how spherical aquarium was designed. Also, I created three more shapes: topmost will serve as tank opening, middle will be water surface and last, half-spherical one, will be a water.

3. Here’s how same objects look like after I applied complicated Layer Styles to all of them

4. You can see detailed information of each effect applied to aquarium parts to make them look "glassy"’

5. In this step I added 3-legged stand, which wire parts was made by stroking Path and leaf-like holders are Emboss-effected things.

6. My Goldfish skin texture was made of design of small black’n'white gradational circles. I named it "okg - Fish Scale 07" and you can use this pattern for your own projects - click with right mouse buttton on corresponding picture and chose Copy. Open Photoshop and Paste in New Document. Select cells as shown on the provided image and go to Edit -> Define Pattern. If I were you, I’d honor someone who created this pattern and name after him…

7. I added some objects (each was made on its own Layers) and applied various Layer Styles. In most cases it was Bevel and Emboss. After all it is #1 effect to create 3d effects. For example: stomach was made of the edge blurred ellipse with applied Bevel and Emboss Layer Style as well.

8. Interesting thing was done in a case to create Goldfish tail and fins texture. First I created New Layer and filled in white. Than I evenly devided it by half with Rectangular Marquee Selection Tool and fill in black I deselected all(Control+D). And applied Wind Filter 4 or 5 times… heck, maybe more. Then I changed Layer mode to Multiply to see though the white are and copied this Layer two times. Original was for tail, one of duplicated for top fin and second for lower fins. And set all of the textured Layers as a Clipping Mask to fins and tail Layers.

9. Next step was case of a fun. I assembled all my Gold Fishie parts together to get(you have to accept my statement) quite a nice result.

10. As always, the rest of things were matter of time and technique. Tell you the truth, I was awfully bored making those tiny things… But give me some credit - I finally finished this project.

11. I pasted assembled Gold fish to a her new home and set its Layer to Overlay mode. I am still thinking about my three wishes. What about ya?

3D Grape Cluster

3D Grape Cluster. 20 min project

In this pretty simple tutorial I will show you how to create dimensional grape cluster in no time.

1. As always we start from absolutely artless shape. In this particular case I used Rounded Rectangle Tool of a Radius=66. Then I duplicated it to a New Layer.

2. This step is most important in a terms of creation a single grape. That’s why I made three different snapshots to show you Layer Style settings. First I applied Inner Glow gradient.

3. To make realistically looking spotlight I checked Texture under Bevel and Emboss and used Photoshop default texture, called "Bubbles". I moved Scale and Depth sliders back and force ’till I found perfect spot I needed.

4. Gradient Overlay gave me a chance to set a gradient color to my grape. I saved created Style and gave my baby name "Grapie"

5. I made a Custom Brush from a shape I created in step 1. Then New Layer and applied "Grapie" Style to it.

6. All I got to do it was to paint, using my Custom Brush. After 8-10 dabs I created a New Layer under and merged stylized Layer with empty Layer, which gave me Layer, uneffected by any style. I repeated this sequence 10 times, keeping all created eleven Layers visible in order artistically manage position of all little greenish ellipses. I added limb, water drops and a drop shadow to complete this, as I said earlier very simple lesson.

3D Spider Web

3D Spider Web. 1 hour project

Recently I saw beatiful images of spiders by german photographer(unfortunately I wasn’t smart enough to remember his name). You even can see an expression on spider’s face(lol). Those photographs inspired me so much, so I postponed my other activities and decided make my own spider’s web…

1. I started this project drawing dumpiest ever rectangular shape and applied Twirl Filter

2. See the result? I corrected it a bit. It happened too thin. So, I duplicated Layer two times, what gave me necessary line wdth and deleted weird curl in the center.

3. Well… Mr. Spider of course is a great architect, but even though he can not create such a perfect design. I gotta be destructive and distort my wonderful Twirlie. That’s why I took that amazing distortion tool like Wave Filter and applied it on concentric twirl. I believe, you can see setting I used for my task through the twirl.

4. In the following step I wasn’t creative(confess, I couldn’t figure any Photoshop tool which can give me lines to be connected to particular points of twirl… maybe you know it) and using Pen Tool, simply drew lines from center to perephery of twirl.

5. And now fun time! Let’s draw full body portrait of Mr. Spider - the landlord of that web.

6. For spiders legs I used custom made Brush(Hardness=70, Jitter size=60 and some spacing between dabs), which gave me freedom to draw spider-like legs. Oh, Jeez! Only now I understood how stupid I was doing that unprofessional step. Well… it’s too late. But for the future sake I will share the easy way do same thing. Anyway, it’s better later, than never. All you have to do it is draw lines, that follow direction of spider’s leg with Pen Tool and stroke path with properly set Brush.

7. To make legs dimensional I set legs Layer Style to the shown settinng. For Pattern Overlay I used one of the Photoshop default pattern.

8. For Mr. Spider suit pattern I drew very approximate design and applied Glass filter on it

9. I finished portrait of His Insectness, adding some hair on its legs, some highlights and reflects over spider’s body.

10. Foliage of the trees was done with customized Brush. Some water drops were added to make my picture look more realistic. To be perfectly honest, I am not very happy with final results… Though, you are my judges now…

3D Tomato

3D Tomato. 15 min project

Well… Dunno about you - tomato is my favorite vegetable. How tasteful pick it right from its bush, wipe it with your shirt sleve andTthis part is not for germs fighters) and put it in your mouth… Oh, sorry, let’s get back to a tution. This tutorial is quite simple and also intended for beginners.

1. As all rounded ojects tomato image should be started from creating a circle. To make shape more natural we have to distorted it a bit. Edit -> Transform -> Warp and Filter -> Liquify will help us to do so. Usage of transformation tools will make object silhouette not so sharp, which is good for realistic purposes…

2. Photoshop has great 3d tool. It is Layer Style: Bevel/Emboss. Use its high values anytime you need to create dimensional effect on the object.

To round our "signore Pomidore" we need make reflection on the opposite side to light direction. Highlights made in two different Opacity Layers - one for blurred version and another for bright. To create highlight use small to medium size Brushes.

3. I used Custom Shape Tool to make tomato crown, checked "Star" and Indent Sides by 70% in the Geometry/Polygon Options. Distorted it a bit with that famous Liquify Filter and using Burn Tool added natural light-shadow impression. What else? Oh, yeah! Drop shadow. When light, which coming from the your window is "warm", add some kind of a "cold" tint(not just a medium grey) to a shadow to make it more realistic.

3D Fried Eggs

3D Fried Eggs. 20 min project

This time I will teach you the easiest way to "cook" 3d eggs. My recipe is quite simple! Count it as a promo of my Photoshop3D restaurant.

1. As always I started with black circle to make an eggs white. Funny… I distorted it with Warp Tool first…

2. and then with Liquify Filter. Look like a pizza pie, isn’t it? Gotta keep this idea for the future "3D Pizza" project.

3. On a top of all I applied Filter -> Distort -> Glass, to make irregular edges.

4. Now it is turn to make it white. Apply Layer Style with Drop Shadow / Emboss(texture) / Color Overlay. Customize Brush behavior to make highlights, burnt spots and speckles on white face.

5. Let’s drop some yolks on white! Create ellips, distorted it a bit with notorious Warp Tool. Apply Layer Style. Add some highlight spot.

6. And the final thing - make it bubbled. Using Custom Brush preset create circle of a small circles. And now "bubbling magic". I created new Layer Style for it. Voila!

3D Lemon

3D Lemon. 30 min project

1. Using Polygon Tool(Path) create polygone object of 10 sides. It will be your guide to create lemon segments.

2. Create additional points on a path and remove small segments and create some kind of a path “flower”. Load selection and fill it with any color. Flatten received result onto Background Layer

3. Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur.

4. Image -> Adjust -> Threshold to round triangles corners.

5. Duplicate Layer and remove background

6. Fill segments in lime color

7. Create two circles on underneath Layer.

8. Apply Filter -> Artistic -> Sponge(0, 20, 0)

9. Merge Layers

10. Distort first left part of lemon slice and then right. using Transform Tool

11. Rotate and distort whole slice

12. Create lemon body on underneath layer. Fill it in yellow and apply Filter -> Texture -> Texturizer - Sandstone. Blur it
